Things I Wish I Could Tell My Dog

what I wish I could tell my dog while living far from her

My dog, Nala, is living with my parents in Colorado while I get myself situated here in England. I think my family and friends understood why I would want to move to another country (I hope) but the only one who I couldn’t explain to where it was that I was going and why, was my dog. She doesn’t speak my language, even though she can sometimes discern what I am saying. Her world is limited to what is in front of her, what is in that moment. She loves so much, but I know she doesn’t sit around missing me.  If I could communicate some things to her, in whatever way she could understand, it would be this…

1. You were chosen.

I have loved you the moment my eyes looked into yours. You were so small and so scared. You peed on everything but it didn’t bother me because I loved you so much. I was so happy to have you – it didn’t matter what else was out there, because as soon as I saw you, I knew you were going to be mine. You were so awkward and I loved watching you discover the world for the first time. Every corner had a new smell and every thing that moved peaked your curiosity. I loved watching you grow.

2. You are so loved.

You have no concept of distance and your reality is all that exists in front of you, in that moment. However, even though you don’t realize it, you are so very much loved. I know my family does a great job loving you, but know that I think about you daily, and long to be snuggled next to you each night. I miss our walks and wrestling. I miss watching you romp around in the snow. I moved very very far away. Across a massive body of water, to a place called England. Did you know that England doesn’t get snow like we do? Everyone in my new home knows about you – I share every update with all of my friends. They all love you too.

3. I did not abandon you.

{Nala, you don’t know that Mommy is on the other end}

In fact, leaving you was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I knew that leaving my family would be hard in general, but I could always talk to them, see their faces on video chat, and know they are ok. I can’t talk to you like I talk to them. We only used to communicate via touch and the occasional bark. I keep tabs on you from across the ocean. Every time my brother is with his phone and a treat, it isn’t a new trick he is performing; he is showing you to me.

4. I miss you like crazy.

Nala, I know you don’t understand human emotions, but I get sad when I think about how much I want you to be here with me. I get homesick for you. Homesick is something hard to describe, but it’s something humans feel when they are far from the ones they love so much for a long time. It’s kind of like being hungry. You just feel it in your gut. I look at photos of you a lot and just miss your wet nose. I miss your silly whining. And how quickly you would run to another room if somebody mentioned the word “bath”. You are so special to me, and being away hurts.

5. This separation is temporary.

Don’t worry; I am working to bring us together again. How could someone who loves another be apart for very long? I want you to explore again with me. There is a park nearby my house that I want to take you too. You will die of happiness from the amount of sticks in this place. There are so many trees and bushes and other dogs. But most of all, we will snuggle together again at night, and you will wake me up with your wet nose pressed on my cheek, yet again.

    It must have been so hard to say goodbye to Nala. Our son and daughter in law have a dog with the same name. 🙂

      It was really hard Sue! And that just means they have great taste (and or like the Lion King 🙂 )
